Description
Here’s a very rare English version of the traditional French Card game Nain Jaune (Yellow Dwarf). There is no indication of the date on the box but from it’s style and construction I estimated manufacture c. 1920’s. This is pure speculation, but it may be that British troops were introduced to the game whilst serving in France during WWI and an unknown British manufacturer decided to produce an English edition? Although this game remains very popular in France to this day, it never really took off in Blighty, making this early English example a real rarity. Another unusual and intriguing aspect of this game is that, instead of the traditional French use of the 7 of diamonds to represent the “Yellow Dwarf”, the British maker uses the 7 of Clubs?
The game is in very good antique condition and includes a complete deck of vintage playing cards and a collection of old counters as shown. The game Rules are printed on a label attached to the underside of the box lid.
