“The Greatest Motoring Game of Skill Ever Invented”

An antique Car Racing Game dating from the early Twentieth century c.1910’s.  Superb period graphics on the box label.  The game includes a large, two-fold game board, six lead Racing Car pieces and a Bone dice.  The box has some edge-loss and minor repairs commensurate with age.  Made in England by H.P. Gibson & Sons Ltd., London.  The label is also marked “International Series”.  Sadly there are no Rules, but I’m sure these could be worked out given the markings on the board.

This is a very rare survivor and there doesn’t appear to be any information about the game on the net.  The Racing Circuit depicted on the board has corners marked “Mountjoy” and “Gough”.  This seems to indicate that it may be based on the Phoenix Park Circuit in Dublin, Ireland?

Extract from Phoenix Park web blog: “The park was first used for motorsport way back in 1903, when the Gordon Bennett speed trials were held along Chesterfield Avenue, the main road which bisects the park. Competitors raced along one mile and flying one kilometre stretches between Mountjoy Corner and the Gough Monument. Among the hazards en route was the Phoenix Memorial, a giant statue on stone columns, which sat on a plinth slap bang in the middle of Chesterfield Avenue. “
