1890’s The Word Builder Activity Set by J W Spear & Sons

Description

Very rare Victorian educational word game, consisting of a Wooden Easel and large number of letter tiles as shown.  The easel is self-supporting by means of a hinged rear leg.  The letter tiles fit neatly and securely within a groove on each of the easel shelves, enabling words or short sentences to be formed and displayed.

The easel and tiles are in very good condition for their age.  The original box has some corner splits / repairs commensurate with age, but the superb artwork on the lid has survived relatively unscathed.  A coded reference has been added to the box and rear of easel at some stage, perhaps an inventory mark from a School?

The game was designed in England and manufactured in Germany  by J W Spear & Sons, Bavaria.  The Art Nouveau styling of the box label, suggests that the game probably dates from the late Victorian period c. 1890’s.
