Description

“Popular Games for Evenings at Home”

A very rare and early games compendium in original small box.  Although there is no date shown, it is estimated to be from the late Victorian period c. 1890 – 1900.  There is no indication of the manufacturer, which was common for early games, but inscriptions on the box label and game board indicate that it was made in Bavaria.  It is likely that it was produced by J. W. Spear & Sons, who were making games for export to English speaking countries at this time.

The contents consist of a 3-fold double sided game board with a Horse Race on one side and Draughts (Checkers) / Backgammon on the back.  There are 5 painted pewter horses with 4 off their stands.  Three stands are also present.  24 black & white wooden draughts / backgammon pieces, a bone dice and assortment of bone counters as shown.  The box measures 22 x 12 x 3 cm.

Unusual to find a set in its original box, which has a superb lithograph label, showing children at play.
